Pilot Wally Funk has died at 87. Denied the chance to become a NASA astronaut, she finally reached space at age 82 aboard a Blue Origin flight.

Funk was also the first female inspector for the Federal Aviation Administration and the first female air safety investigator for the National Transportation Safety Board.

In 2021, Wally Funk traveled to space with Jeff Bezos aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard, becoming the oldest woman to travel in space.
