A mayor was shot dead in an area of southern Mexico where drug cartels are active, local authorities said Saturday.

Oaxaca prosecutors said San Miguel Amatitlán mayor Joel Bravo was killed in an armed attack, without providing further details.

The killing comes as Mexico tries to project an image of safety and modernity while co-hosting the football World Cup with the United States and Canada.
