Minnesota Governor Tim Walz declared a peacetime emergency and mobilized the National Guard to assist with wildfire suppression as more than 17 active wildfires rage in northern Minnesota.

The U.S. Forest Service closed 225,000 acres of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness on Saturday due to multiple wildfires and continued dry conditions.

The governor also said a special session to address economic relief for businesses affected by the fires appears unlikely at this point.

Gov. Tim Walz on Wednesday indicated he’s unlikely to call a special session of lawmakers in response to wildfires burning in northeast Minnesota. A special session would have been needed to continue the peacetime emergency Walz declared last month after an outbreak of forest fires in and around the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
