In eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, an Ebola outbreak is reshaping life, with fear spreading faster than information and hospitals turning into places of urgent containment rather than care.

The current outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo virus, a rare type of Ebola that has no approved medicines or vaccines to combat it. It is occurring in a remote area of Congo that also faces armed violence by rebel groups as well as displacement. Ebola intensifies the suffering, with its terrifying symptoms that evoke a modern-day plague.

The outbreak is concentrated in Congo's eastern province of Ituri, which accounts for more than 90% of the cases.

Dr. Peter Stafford, his wife, Rebekah Stafford, and their four children all arrived safely on Monday, according to Serge, a Pennsylvania-based Christian missions organization.
